When discarded fishing line is left in the environment, wildlife, from birds and ducks to dolphins and turtles, can ingest it or get fatally entangled. The most common type of fishing line, monofilament, can last for hundreds of years in the environment.

Try to minimize fishing the fishing line you leave behind and always recycle your old line rather than throwing it away. Many recreation sites around the country have monofilament fishing line receptacles and most sporting goods retailers also provide recycling service. If neither of these is an option in your area, you can mail your used fishing line to:
